Proview expands suit for iPad name

Published by Steve Coleman on February 28, 2012

Proview Electronics says it wants the iPad name back.

The Chinese company has amended a suit filed in Santa Clara, California's Superior Court asking for the return of worldwide rights to the name and is suing Apple Inc. for alleged fraud and unfair competition.

Proview says it sold the name in 2009 to a company named IP Application Development on the understanding it was an abbreviation of the business' name.

Besides having the sale revoked, the Taiwan-based LED light maker says it wants unspecified compensation, a share of Apple's profits from iPad sales and a court order for Apple to stop using the name.

Proview also says it still owns the name for China, but a Shanghai court rejected a demand last week that Apple stop selling the iPad in China.
