China loses WTO ruling

Published by Steve Coleman on January 30, 2012

The World Trade Organization has ruled against China and its export restrictions on raw materials.

China had promised to eliminate most export duties and quotas when it joined the WTO about 10 years ago.

The US, European Union, Canada, Turkey and Mexico complained that Chinese controls on bauxite, coke, magnesium, manganese and zinc were out of line with the previous commitment. China had argued that it was entitled to some exceptions under the current WTO rules.

The current ruling may also apply to Chinese rare earths.
