CP adds missing link to repair strategy

Less is turning out to be more for Canadian Pacific.

The rail company announced Jan. 18 that it has completed capital investments at its Locomotive Reliability Centre in Toronto, the fourth of four major repair yards designed to handle everything locomotive-related.

CP made the decision to reduce the number of repair yards from eight to four, but make the ones remaining "highly-efficient super shops with improved repair capabilities."

"The upgraded, consolidated facilities coupled with the introduction of a LEAN continuous improvement approach, allows for standardized processes and practices and enables improvements in locomotive availability and reliability," said Mike Franczak, Executive Vice-President, Operations in a company news release. "These locomotive repair centres operate 7/24 and are capable of doing all needed work for all locomotive types."

The Toronto LRC joins a network that already includes Calgary, Winnipeg and St. Paul, Minnesota. Bringing Toronto online completed the second part of a three-stage plan to have Canadian Pacific tackle both scheduled and unscheduled locomotive repairs at any one of the four centres.

Canadian Pacific's new LRCs will look after major work for the company's engines including: traction motors, wheels and heavy repairs such as engine and turbo change outs. CP decided to place the four LRCs at its major transportation hubs to help keep the wheels turning.
