CME recommends strengthening interprovincial trade agreement

Published by Stephanie Brooks on June 07, 2012

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) is asking provincial trade ministers to strengthen Canada’s interprovincial trade agreement – the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) – in a letter to the Committee on Internal Trade.

Businesses currently have stronger dispute settlement measures in NAFTA, and soon the European Union deal, than they have in enforcing Canada’s AIT.

The AIT plays a crucial role in ensuring a thriving national economy and allowing all regions to benefit. As such, the letter advocates for the inclusion of a person-to-government dispute resolution mechanism to address unresolved problems of domestic trade.

CME, along with various other associations, signed the letter in anticipation of next week’s meeting of the Committee on Internal Trade in Yellowknife.
