CME President & CEO accompanying prime minister’s business delegation to India

Published by Stephanie Brooks on November 05, 2012

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) President & CEO, Jayson Myers, is accompanying the Prime Minister, the Minister of International Trade, and a delegation of Canadian business executives this week to India to further advance Canada's interests in the increasingly important Indian market.

This trip is an important opportunity to make significant progress on a number of important bilateral initiatives such as ratifying the Foreign Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement, finalizing administrative arrangements to implement the Nuclear Cooperation Agreement signed in 2010, and renewing both governments' commitment towards concluding a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CEPA) next year.

CME wrote to the prime minister prior to his visit to express its support for the government's approach to concluding negotiations towards a CEPA, and outline its members' priority issues with India. These include market access, infrastructure, movement of skilled labour, promoting two-way investment, and positioning Canada as a logistics gateway to North America.

India and other Asian markets provide substantial opportunities to Canadian industry, and one of the predominant purposes of the trip is to discuss growing and strengthening Canada's economic and commercial relationship with India. The visit will help deepen relations between Canadian and Indian business and government leaders - critical to enhancing cooperation, addressing barriers to trade and investment, and defining a common vision for growing our commercial relationship.
