CME supports government changes to EI program

Retooling Canada’s Employment Insurance (EI) program is essential for manufacturers looking to attract and retain skilled workers, according to Canada's leading trade and industry association, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME).

The changes include removing disincentives to work, which will help unemployed Canadians find jobs in their local labour markets as well as employers facing today’s skills shortage. 

Human Resources Minister Diane Finley addressed the changes in the House of Commons May 15, saying Canadians won’t be forced to work jobs outside their skill sets. 

“The government’s changes to EI reform are a positive and integral step in addressing the challenges for Canadian industry,” says CME’s Vice President of National Policy, Mathew Wilson. “We applaud the efforts to work toward providing more opportunities for a more modern, world-class and effective workforce.”

The changes come during a time of an unprecedented skills shortage in Canada, where a current jobless rate of about seven per cent prevails. Canadians should be expected to take available jobs in their local labour markets for which they are qualified and CME supports the efforts to help unemployed Canadians find jobs quickly.

“Our members agree that the number one challenge they face is finding qualified and available labour to fill positions including management, general labour and skilled labour,” says Wilson. “These reasonable and necessary changes will help better connect employers with skilled, unemployed Canadians.”

Hundreds of thousands of unfilled jobs remain across Canada in all sectors of the economy. As major projects like shipbuilding, oil and gas, nuclear and hydro-electricity, mining, as well as manufacturing and exporting continue to develop across the country, the need for skilled workers will only continue to increase.
