CME relieved Canadian steel and aluminum exempt from U.S. tariffs but remains concerned about third party diversion

OTTAWA (March 8, 2018) - Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) is relieved the U.S. administration has decided to exempt Canada from tariffs on steel and aluminum for unfounded security reasons.

"The tariffs could have had devastating impacts on both the Canadian and American industries due to the highly integrated nature of its supply chains," said Dennis Darby, President & CEO of CME. "CME appreciates the federal government stepping up for industry on this important issue and calls for their continued support to ensure Canadian steel remains exempt."

"Manufacturers are concerned that the tariffs imposed today will lead to the diversion of steel and aluminum to Canada from third party countries," added Darby. "This shows the importance of having the Canadian and U.S. governments work together to protect industry against unfair trade practices, something CME requested as part of its NAFTA recommendations."
